Launched in 2020, the Night Shift Podcast was a part of the Surfcasters Journal online magazine and set out to spotlight the history, culture and tradition of the surf fishing culture through interviews with prominent members of the community as well as a variety of custom lure manufacturers both historical and modern. Over its near 4-year run, it became extremely popular and developed a dedicated following.

The Night Shift Podcast featured some amazing guests including the likes of Gary Soldati of Big Water Pikes, West Coast lure builder Mike Fixter, the venerable Al Gags, Wayne Hess of Guppy Lures and more. It also cataloged the history of the sport of surfcasting by way of interviews with surfcasting legends including Dennis Zambrotta, Willy Young, and even Steve Campo. Many of the guests had never appeared on a podcast before, and with the passing of several guests in recent years, for some it was the final opportunity to hear their stories in their own words.

When we found out that the Night Shift Podcast was being shutdown and the episodes would no longer be available, it was decided that the archives would be hosted by the surfcast podcast as a way to both honor the surfcasting tradition as well as catalog the unique history and perspective contained within the episodes of the Night Shift Podcast. Both Jerry and Toby wanted to ensure that what had been created by Zeno and the Surfcasters Journal family through the Night Shift Podcast was not lost to time.
