I have never started the season with a teaser attached. I’ve never even fished a teaser the first couple weeks of the season. These are facts. But does that make any sense?
Look, in season 1, episode 15 we talked a little about the pros and cons of fishing with teasers. We barely scratched the surface, but in that episode we really poked holes in all the excuses we use to not fish them. And I’ve written in the past about how teasers can work really well away from the classic sand beaches- they can be highly effective in places like estuaries, rivers, and outflows. And at this early part of the season- for a week or so- I’m generally more accepting of catching smaller fish. Dare I even say I’m fine with it!
So then, wouldn’t early season be THE time to fish teasers, even if I never step foot on a sand beach? Wouldn’t this be prime time, as I’m ok with the “risk” of catching smaller fish, genuinely just want to bend the rod, and, for the most part, fish smaller, quieter waters with smaller bait?
I think so.
Yet does anyone do that anymore? The glory days on the Cape feel far behind, and all the characters that walked those hallowed grounds at the birth of the Red Gill are basically gone- but were they the last to do this? Is the early season teaser even consideration? You reading this right now, have you ever even considered it?! It feels a little crazy, when you consider all the reasons why a teaser can excel.
Maybe I should do it. Maybe I won’t. And maybe that means I’m missing out on something great.

I always consider it, however I always seem to convince myself not to use one. Maybe that is a mistake I always think later.
In the south bays of LI 2 weeks ago I put one on when I found the fish popping something on the surface but couldn’t get their attention with soft plastics or plugs. A week later I find bunker pods and now I’m definitely not thinking about using it again for a while.
Great Food for thought Jerry there is no reason to not keep a teaser in the quiver I religiously used a teaser in November-December in the NJ surf I have yet to play with that technique since I’ve moved up in MA definitely tying some up. Would love your take on fly tied teaser and plastic teasers
